– Timon R. Böse, 艺术史学家,柏林,2026年Metanoia (Ancient Greek: μετάνοια) describes a profound shift of mind, an existential transformation of heart and worldview, one that often emerges from crisis, trauma, or intense inner reckoning. At 42, Swiss artist Philipp Mettler looks back on a richly layered path. After early success as a musician, an excellent degree from the University of St. Gallen, and a business career, abstract painting became the medium of his creative practice.Mettler’s art springs from an inexhaustible inner power and restlessness that long refused to be channeled. Complex childhood experiences and the stutter that came with them, a constant companion ever since, drove him, despite every outward achievement, toward excess and relentless travel across the world, without the deep hunger of his soul ever finding what it sought: a lasting resonance between this inner force and the life lived outside it. In art, he finally found a path along which inner tension could become creative energy. Painting became his way of self-knowledge and a source of continuous renewal.Between his private and his artistic life, Mettler no longer draws emotional boundaries. Yet the making of powerful work demands, in the midst of our restless world, a stable mental and spiritual ground. Only from such inner equilibrium can his art reach its full expressive power. He therefore tends carefully to his vitality, eats mindfully, moves daily, and leads a structured life. He places his mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health at the center. Whatever no longer serves his artistic growth, he works to transform. With a striking effect, even his stutter has grown less and less.In the vast city of Shanghai, in the solitude of the studio, an inner reflection and existential transformation took hold, Mettler’s personal metanoia. Here he moved beyond the boundaries of a strongly introspective abstract expressionism, one shaped above all by the artist’s engagement with his own inner life. His more recent works turn the gaze outward and open toward a wider field. The shift came through the concentrated act of making itself: in wrestling with his art, the artist was transformed, and the works that arose from this process carry a transformative force of their own into dialogue with the world. For Mettler, being an artist means not only being fully himself and living that self without compromise. In art, he finds the freedom to exist authentically and at the same time to enter into genuine relation with others. His creative force has arrived at a new stability; his sense of direction and purpose has sharpened.Mettler has come to understand that transformation is not the exception but the very ground of a living existence. Rather than seeking security in fixed certainties, his works make a case for receiving change as a permanent condition and cultivating an inner resilience toward the uncertainties of a world in constant flux. These paintings were made with a child’s openness and ease. They invite us to meet the waves of unrest and change with composure, and to trust in that intuitive and transformative knowing: that in genuine dialogue, new ways of being together become possible.– Timon R.
