Introduction

The two resident artists approached the issue from the perspectives of natural weather and urban systems, respectively, but both keenly captured the critical state of order that is about to change or be challenged.

Tielin’s installation work ( made of yellow brooms, fans, motor, stone, yellow umbrellas and leaves) focuses on the process of energy gathering before a thunderstorm arrives, where the dynamics of rotating airflow and fluttering leaves occur. It presents the tension of natural laws on the eve of an outbreak. In another two works, he is experimenting with mark-making on print to share his interest in repetition of forms of movements. Lucas Sales uses Shanghai as the background to observe how urban symbols such as traffic signs try to guide direction and efficiency, and compares them with real-life experiences full of contingency and path deviation. His work combines traffic language with playful elements to explore the contradiction between clear guidance and uncertainty of direction, as well as the desire to slow down in a fast pace.

The core of this open day is to show how these two resident artists reveal the dynamic tension between rules and disorder. Whether it is the moment when natural forces are ready to go, or the friction point between urban norms and individual free will, they invite the audience to pay attention to these “edge of order” moments that exist around us and are full of potential changes by reinterpreting everyday objects or symbols (household tools/traffic signs).

Before thunderstorm comes,
swirling vortices of air,
bring leaves floating and in motion.
Brooms, fans, leaf blowers;
gathering, murmuring;
It’s a party with flickering lights.
Yes, it is going to rain.
卷起飘舞的树叶;

“During my residency in Shanghai, I observed how urban graphics shape everyday life with a promise of direction. Traffic signs try to organize the flow, but we don’t always know where we’re going. The city points the way, but life insists on curves and detours.

In this work, I explore the friction between guidance and uncertainty — between the rush and the desire to go slow. I blend the language of traffic with playful elements, inspired by the contrast I’ve seen here: the hurry of work and the small moments of whimsy that need no explanation.

With these pieces, I invite you to slow down and enjoy the moment.”
