MinYoung Lee
MinYoung Lee is a clarinet-based artist and producer whose practice is grounded in classical and contemporary music. Lee explores the sonic possibilities of the clarinet and has recently expanded this practice by incorporating effects pedals and electronic equipment into sound design.
With a particular interest in interactive art and interdisciplinary practice, Lee has collaborated with marbling artists, movement artists, and visual artists. A recent project explored the theme of memory by combining live clarinet and electronic sound with a virtual environment in which a village was reconstructed as a game-like map.
During the Shanghai residency, Lee will collaborate with an engineer and a composer on an experimental project tracing points of connection between the waters of Jeju and Shanghai. The movement of water and the sensory qualities of the two places will be reinterpreted through their distinctive visual and sonic language. The project will take shape through film, performance, and sound.
Lee also shares the creative process behind these works and other clarinet-based projects through the YouTube channel romangcla.
