Xiaole Zhan 詹小乐 is an emerging Chinese-Aotearoa (New Zealand) writer and composer based in Naarm (Melbourne) interested in the collision between music, language and postcolonial theory. They are the recipient of a 2025 Creative New Zealand Fellowship, and their compositions have been debuted internationally by the Vancouver Chamber Choir in Canada, as well as in London as the winner of the Commonwealth International Composition Award for their work, ‘speech having its way again, I gave a cry’ which explores the boundaries between human and non-human voices and tone colours.

As a writer, Xiaole was the winner of the 2023 Kill Your Darlings Non-Fiction Prize for their autobiographical essay Think An Empty Room, Moonly With Phoneglow exploring experiences of racism growing up in a Pākehā-Chinese family and the simultaneous intimacy and alienation of the digital world during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the winner of the 2023 Charles Brasch Young Writers Essay Competition for their essay Muscle Memory exploring music, depression, queerness, and gender discrimination. Xiaole is also the recipient of a 2025 Varuna Red Room Poetry Fellowship, the 2024 Kat Muscat Fellowship, and featured in the 2025 Best of Australian Poems anthology.

As an interdisciplinary performer and composer, Xiaole was a guest artist at the 2026 Melbourne Writers Festival where they performed in their poetry and music duo DUSK MOUTH 名 — named after the components of the Chinese character for ‘name: 名’ which is made of the character for ‘dusk: 夕’ and the character for ‘mouth: 口’ – a name, like music, is a call in the dark. As the 2024 New North Emerging Composer, Xiaole developed ‘疑是地上霜 (I thought the ground was covered in snow),’ a staged musical work of ‘accompanied memoir’ for narrator, reed organ, ‘ghost piano’, percussion, violin and electronics exploring their Chinese-Aotearoa heritage and intergenerational trauma. Xiaole has also been commissioned extensively within gallery installation settings, such as at Science Gallery Melbourne as part of the 2024 Now or Never Festival, as the 2024 Buxton Contemporary Composer-in-Residence and at the Grainger Museum where their work You’re in Australia now girl, speak English was part of the decolonial musical project ‘Reimagining Landscapes’.
