Tobias Jacobsen (b. 1992) is a visual and conceptual artist based in Copenhagen. He works from his studio in Vesterbro and has participated in international residencies and exhibitions. Jacobsen is represented by De Gallery, Copenhagen, and has exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions in Denmark and Japan. He holds a BA in Visual Communication from the Danish School of Media and Journalism (DMJX).
His practice is rooted in painting and extends into ceramics and print. Working at the intersection of art and graphic design, Jacobsen approaches painting as a site where contemporary visual culture can be examined through pop-cultural phenomena and theoretical frameworks. His work is concept-driven, informed by an interest in how visual languages circulate, take form, and mutate in contemporary culture.
Central to his practice is Japanese anime as both an emotional language and a cultural structure. Drawing on Sianne Ngai’s writing on kawaii and Takashi Murakami’s theory of Superflat, he uses anime as an aesthetic driver to examine contemporary global culture. Digital workflows allow him to remix existing imagery, which he then translates into dense, immersive oil paintings that reintroduce intuition, material resistance, and human unpredictability. His works function as overgrown surfaces, where layered figures and textures resist hierarchy, inviting prolonged viewing and emotional engagement.
During his residency, Jacobsen explores themes from the iconic anime ‘Ghost in the Shell’ from 1995 as a response to the narrative of being an artist and human in a vastly developing digital world. What is the contemporary definition of a ghost, and where do they exist? What is a human if the lines between body and machine are blurred out? In order to reflect upon these questions, Jacobsen uses aesthetics and themes from retro sci-fi anime and mixes them into new compositions and treatments.
