Chaeyeon Hong
Chaeyeon Hong (b.1991) studied painting at Ewha Womans University, where she earned both her BFA and MFA degrees. She has held two solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows and award programs. While based in Seoul, her artistic practice has increasingly expanded to an international context. In 2025, she participated in the Creekside Arts residency in California, and is currently working at ACENTRICSPACE in Shanghai. In 2026, she is scheduled to join the MERZ residency in Scotland.
Through painting, Hong persistently explores the concept of “boundary.” To her,  a boundary is not a mere dividing line but an aesthetic space where different elements mix and coexist. She identifies herself as a “boundary person,” situated between worlds, and channels her diverse life experiences and artistic ventures into her work.
Her practice involves reconfiguring visual materials collected from daily life—digital imagery, personal memories, and social symbols into imagined dialogues. —Rather than forming a linear narrative, her paintings unfold as loosely connected and multilayered image structures. Her works extend beyond the confines of a single canvas, spilling onto the edges, connecting multiple canvases, and often incorporating installation. By traversing walls, floors, and ceilings, her paintings transform into open visual fields that shift with the viewer’s movement and gaze. This “proliferating painting” breaks away from the fixed frame, proposing nonlinear and multi-perspectival experiences. It represents her ongoing painterly experiment of reconfiguring boundaries of identity, reality, and fantasy, online and offline, into dynamic and evolving visual forms.
